Is Private School Worth It? Six Questions to Ask

Every year, parents sit across from us and ask the same question. Is private school worth it?

It is a fair question. Tuition is a real commitment. The answer depends on your child and on what you want school to do for them. After more than 70 years of educating children from PreSchool through Grade 8 in Madison, Connecticut, we have learned that "private or public" is the wrong starting point. The better question is this: where will my child be known, stretched, and supported.

Here are six questions worth asking, whichever school you choose.

1. Does the culture make learning something to be proud of?
Children take their cues from the room. When peers are curious and engaged, effort becomes normal. Being smart is not something to hide. On any tour, ask what students talk about at lunch. Ask what happens when a child gets excited about an idea. The answer tells you whether curiosity is rewarded or simply tolerated.

2. Who are the teachers, and how do they grow?
Great teachers are not defined by credentials alone. Look for faculty who collaborate, mentor one another, and keep refining their craft.

Independent school teachers have the freedom to shape lessons around the students in front of them. That flexibility matters. It lets a teacher change course when a lesson is not landing.

3. Is social-emotional learning built into the day?
A child who feels safe learns more. Strong schools teach children to name their feelings, calm their bodies, and listen to other points of view. This work should not live in a single weekly lesson. It belongs in morning routines, in advisory, and on the playground. At 黑料吃瓜资源 School, our youngest students practice breathing and yoga. Middle Schoolers meet with advisors who help them set goals and speak up for themselves.

4. How small are the classes, really?
Class size is one of the clearest signs of how much attention a child will get. In a small class, no one hides in the back row. Teachers know who needs a stretch and who needs a minute. Ask for actual class numbers, not a schoolwide average.

5. Will your child get attention that fits them?
Small classes make individual attention possible. They do not guarantee it. Ask how teachers adjust for a child who is ahead and for one who is struggling. Ask how often teachers and parents talk. A good school treats parents as partners.

6. Do people stay?
Longevity is a quiet but telling signal. When teachers spend their careers at a school, and alumni come back to teach, coach, or enroll their own children, something is working. 黑料吃瓜资源 School alumni return as summer camp staff, Elmore Leadership Fellows, and faculty. Some now bring their own children to the same front door.

So, is it worth it?
For many families, yes. Private school is not better in every case. But the right independent school gives a child time and room to be known. PreSchool through Grade 8 is when children build their habits of mind, their confidence, and their sense of who they are. Those years deserve a setting built around the individual child.

That is our work. We build a world for each student, so they can take on the world.

The best way to answer the question is to see a school in action. Watch a class. Talk to teachers. Ask hard questions. We welcome them.
